Keith Van Wickler
MPEd, Master’s in Physical Education
A new Rockaway resident, Keith grew up on Long Island. Playing almost all sports, he has been coaching in some capacity since the age of 14 when he began working at camps and with youth programs. After focusing on baseball and football in high school, Keith switched to rugby in college while pursuing degrees in Anthropology and Psychology. He began writing strength and conditioning programs as captain of his Division 1 club. After representing the North East in the All-American trials, Keith moved to Sydney, Australia to pursue the sport at the highest level he could, playing with the University of New South Wales and world renowned Randwick Rugby Club.
After returning to New York, Keith began coaching at CrossFit Buffalo while earning a Masters Degree in Physical Education. His athletic pursuits shifted from the field to the gym, competing and coaching in CrossFit. Eventually returning to Long Island, Keith became the head coach of a CrossFit gym in Long Beach.
While continuing to manage injuries himself, he began building a passion and expertise in not just performance, but injury prevention and recovery, working closely with Active Life Rx and Vatra Spine and Sport. He then took this expertise to CrossFit South Brooklyn, where he introduced new methods and programs over his 5 years there. In addition to CrossFit, Keith also trained, competed and coached in Olympic Weightlifting and Strongman over a 10 year period.
In recent years, Keith’s love of sport and competition has brought him back to the rugby pitch and the baseball diamond, both as a coach and an athlete. He coaches a competitive travel baseball team, plays himself weekly, and works and plays with Brooklyn Rugby Club.
More causally, Keith also surfs, and plays basketball and volleyball. He recently spent 18 months working with a boxing coach, and has trained beginners looking for an introduction to the sport.
Keith’s focus has evolved further into longevity, efficiency, and holistic approaches to physical health and performance for people of all fitness levels and athletic ability. His background and experience in Anthropology, Physical Education and both fitness and sport culture have led to a unique methodology with a basis in human evolution and biomechanics.
He believes that using the gym and our environment to train and live in respect to our biology leads to sustainable physical capabilities and significant improvements in health and quality of life, which allow us to express and enjoy our innate athleticism in any way we choose.
